Mad science

WALT predict and explain what is happening during our science experiments.

On Friday last week Te Manga did some science experiments. The 3 things we did was crawling colours, salt volcano and magic milk.My favourite one was the salt volcano because all you need is salt oil and water. What you need to is put some water in a cup then poor some oil in gently and slowly otherwise it will go all bubbly. After that you put a little bit of salt, but only do it little by little because if you do it fast it could spill everywhere. Then the salt goes to the bottom and make's bubbles pop up.

My second favourite thing was the magic milk Because all you need is milk food colouring and a little box.The first thing you need to do is put a little bit of milk into the box then put a few colours in to the milk . You would also need a stick and some Liquid with those dip the stick into the liquid then into the milk and the colours will spread everywhere. If you keeped dipping it and moving the stick around it will turn into one colour. That was why it was one of my favourites. when we finished we had to tip it in a bin all of it together looked so cool.

Te Whare Tui Camp 2020

This year Te Manga and Te Tinana went to the Coopers Beach Camp. We had so much fun all the activities were: Waterside, Kayaking, Slippy hockey, Beach activities and all the inside activities. My absolute favourite one was the obstacle course.

Cheek out my slide here

Sailing the Pacific

We are learning about traditional sailing and navigation methods used by early Polynesian voyagers.

What did you enjoy? I enjoyed finding out lots of new facts about navigation.

What was tricky? finding the answers and knowing where to put them.

SJ P2 No3 2003

- Sailing the Pacific

We are learning about traditional sailing and navigation methods used by early Polynesian voyagers.

Activity 1 - WALT locate, identify, select and present relevant information.

Traditional Pacific Navigators found land by looking for signs like clouds, birds, stars and ocean swells.

Use the text to help you complete the table about traditional Pacific navigation tools. The first one has been done for you.

Clouds

  • Clouds moving across the sky slow down when they pass over land

  • The colour of the clouds would change if they were above land.

Birds

Watching these birds the shearwater and the godwit helped to lead voyages because they migrate on land.

Stars

In the night certan stars always rise and set at the same positions on the horizon.

Ocean Swells

Ocean swells,or other unusual movements in the water, could be a sing that land was close.

Activity 2 - Read about the tirito ‘etu (or starpeeker)

The tirito ‘etu (or starpeeker) is a navigating instrument from the Cook Islands. It was made from an empty coconut shell with holes drilled in it. Water was filled to the level of the lower ring of holes. This helped to keep it lined up with the horizon as the boat moved up and down in the waves. The navigator looked through two of the holes until the reflection of a particular star came into view. The holes were positioned so that the star could be seen only when the vaka was directly east or west of its destination.

Activity 3 - The Vaka

Use the text to help you answer the following questions about ‘The Vaka’

What type of natural materials were used to build the vaka?

These vaka has two hulls            made from many planks carefully stitched together with cord made from coconut fibre. Their sails were often woven from pandanus leaves.

How long was Kupe’s vaka and how many people could it carry?

Some of these ocean-going vaka could carry up to 150 people. Kupe’s waka may have been up to 21 meters long.

What supplies were often carried on board?

Supplies such as dried bananas,taro,breadfruit,

Coconuts and fish.

Raranga Matihiko

On the 9/11/20 my class Te Manga went to Waitangi which was our second visit.  That time we made Poe with sculpt gl that was very fun, I put a smiley face on it , some Koru's and some waves.

Then we did sculpt gl where you are supposed to carve anything you want. The last thing we did was VR where you put this cool mask on and see really different things then in real life you can also draw things. After that we switched groups and went on a walk.

Keeping New Zealand clean

On the  22.9.20 Te Puawai, Te Kauru and my class Te Manga went to lake ngatu to do some planting and picking up rubbish on the track.

All the teams planted about 5 plants each the types of trees we planted were native Kanuka and manuka.

I learnt that keeping the environment beautiful helps the waterways and farmlands develop easier without all the rubbish getting caught everywhere.

My favourite part there was helping out the community and helping out Zana and Lucy with getting the plants out of the bags.

Covid-19 Writing

What happens at level 2?

I think that at level 2 we have to use physical distance.

At level 2 lockdown we all have to make sure that we are physical distancing. I am not happy that covid 19 has hit us again in New Zealand. I feel quite scared for my dad's sisters family that live in Te Awamutu which is near Auckland. All of NZ should know to wash their hands and use lots of hand sanitizer. This is called hand hygiene. Always remember that we need to be 1-2 meters apart and we need to stay in our bubbles. The people in Auckland need to stay in isolation. We need to try really hard to not bite our nails and touch our face. We need to make sure we wash our hands before and after we go somewhere.

Thank-you for reading about what I think about Covid 19

From Kaydee
